WARDE INVITATIONAL 2009 (January 10^th)

The first annual Warde Invitational almost didn’t come to be. The snow was threatening and a couple of teams cancelled but the show went on. The tournament was pushed forward and moved to four mats with no breaks. Once the wrestling began it was all Warde. Warde finished with an impressive 267 points, 119 points ahead of the second place finisher Cheshire. The top three was Warde 267, Cheshire 148 and Fairfield Prep 128. Fairfield Ludlowe finished 6^th with 116 points. Warde placed an impressive 10 finalists with 7 champs.

At 103 senior Cameron Barnard started a streak of 5 champions with a 5-3 decision over a solid Joey Battonelli from Stamford. At 112 Sophomore Evan Fraser continued his undefeated season with a 3-2 victory over state ranked Garrett Gitterman. At 119 Brendan McBreairty continued the success with a pin over Scott Tomlinson of Cheshire. At 125 Ian McAllister faced teammate James Neamonitis who upset second seed Andrew Lattimer in the semis. Ian won by fall in the second period. The streak of champions reached 5 when undefeated JR Bobby Rigilano dominated Cory Lens from New Fairfield with an 8-4 decision. In a highly anticipated match Curtis Watkins of Warde face #1 ranked Mike Frick of New Fairfield. The hard fought battle, which found both competitors fighting off their back, ended with a 14-8 decision by Frick giving Curtis his 1^st loss of the season. At 140 Ian Markowitz wrestled back hard for a third place finish. Warde’s 6^th champion came at 160 where Alex Delaney used last minute heroics to gain the victory and best finals match of the day. At 189 Alfonzo gave Ludlow’s FCAIC champion Henry Fatigate a hard fought battle losing a 6-2 decision. Warde’s final champion of  the day came at 215 when Enzo Cardillo pinned Prep’s Carlos Romero at 2:36. Finishing up the tournament was Warde’s heavyweight Nate Bass who secured a fall over Ludlowe’s Allyn Fantegrossi.  Warde remains undefeated at 8-0 and currently ranked #6 in the state. Next up for Warde is a trip to New England powerhouse Mt Anthony VT tournament.
