Warde Places Third at MT Anthony

The Fairfield Warde wrestling team showed their depth with a hard fought 3rd place finish at the Mt Anthony Vermont’s Invitational. Warde place 10 wrestlers out of 13 wrestlers entered in the tournament. Warde finished third with 152.50 behind Averill Park, N.Y.(164) and Mt Anthony 248.

At 103 Cameron Barnard placed fourth after a close match in the constellation finals. Cameron wrestled tough going 2-2 on the day. At 112 Evan Fraser battled MAU wrestler Mike Bradley in the finals. Evan suffered his first loss of the season, getting caught and pinned in the second period. At 119 Brandon McBreairty battled back after a heart wrenching loss in the semis. After being up the whole match Brandon relaxed a little and loss by 1 in the last seconds of the third period. Brandon showed what it is to wrestle back and finished third on the day. Ian McAllister ran into a tough CT opponent Robby Ferrante (Shelton) in the semis. In a close match Ian fell short losing a decision. Ian wrestled back hard losing in the consolation finals match placing 4th. At 130 Warde’s Bobby Rigilano remained undefeated at 18-0 with a 7-1 decision over MT Anthony’s Dan Pierce in the finals. Bobby looked sharp on the day dominating all of his opponents. At 135 Curtis Watkins wrestled in the hardest weight class of the tournament. There were 3 New England place-winner caliber wrestlers. Curtis lost in the semifinals to Steve Sugrue (ranked 1st in MA) on a controversial takedown call at the edge. Curtis also wrestled back hard and dominated his opponents on his way back to third. Ian Markowitz had a great tournament at 140 placing third on the day. Ian beat Mike Smith from Rutland HS, the only person who defeated him in the consolation finals. At 145 Luke Allen showed some signs of returning back to form with some impressive matches on the day. Luke lost twice to the same opponent who placed third on the day. At 152 Alex Delaney had a solid day placing fourth. Alex lost on a controversial call at the end of his consolation finals match. Up 4-3 with 10 seconds left Alex was called for locked hands and gave up the escape and lost by 1.  Matt McDonald started his day off strong with a fall in the first round before having to withdrawal from the tournament with a shoulder injury. At 189 Alfonzo Sneed went 3-1 on the day with a third place finish. Alfonzo lost in the semis to the returning champ at the weight. At 215 Enzo Cardillo’s only loss was to Shelton HS star performer Patch Gillen. Enzo had a solid day placing 4th and going 2-2. Nate Bass at HWT ran into some tough competition going 0-2 on the day.

 

Warde is currently 9-0 on the season ranked #4 in the state.
